Mumbai Mirror: Mumbai Marathon is On Its Way!

Ethiopia's Ayele Abshero, the fastest man on the start-line (2:04:23) along with Dinknesh Mekash, a two-time winner in Mumbai, will lead the elite field at the 14thedition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) on January 15. Joining the best in the world will be top Indian athletes —Olympian Kheta Ram, MD Yunusand Elam Singh as well as Jyoti Gawate, Monica Raut and Monica Athare — who will take centre stage and vie for a prize money of USD 384,000.

This year, the event is expected to witness 42,379 runners of which 6,342 runners have registered for the full marathon, 14,663 for the half marathon and 19,980 for the dream run. Other categories such as the Senior Citizen Run has 921 entries and Champions With Disability has 433 entries.

SCMM 2017 has introduced a Mumbai Portal from January 12 to January 15 outside the Trident Hotel, where people can connect and share their stories. By conversing through a portal, participants step out of their comfort zones, talk to someone completely unrelated to their individual lives and discover the multitude of amazing things happening all over the world. There will be a mix of programmed interactions and open hours for all Mumbaikars to come and experience the portal.

A few of the inspiring stories planned are of Major DP Singh, India's first blade runner and marathoner who will talk to a Syrian refugee hero based in Berlin; Harish Iyer, an equal rights activist who will share his story with Maria Bashir, first woman prosecutor in Afghanistan; and Harsha Bhogle, who will connect with an Afghan cricket star who has used his passion to bring about a revolution in the country.

A shuttle service from Currey Road station and Lower Parel station has been organised for half marathon participants. These buses, which are free for all half marathon participants wearing valid bibs, will operate from 3:30 am to 5 am on race day.

All confirmed participants from Mumbai and suburbs can collect their running numbers at the Mirchi Get Active Expo from January 6 to January 8 at MMRDA Grounds. Outstation runners can collect their running numbers on January 14 from Richardson & Cruddas.
