Help us forge meaningful connections

Join us in advancing a Shared_Mission

Shared_Studios exists because the diversity of human experience is a source of joy, strength, and possibility for all of us. None of us get enough of it.

We use Portals to help communities around the world embrace diversity and acknowledge the commonalities between us.

Every choice we make is in service of that mission. Whether we are building a new prototype or choosing our next Portal location, we do it to help people encounter perspectives from around the globe.

At an important historical moment

The world is getting smaller, but not kinder. Instead of connecting us, the internet encourages tribalism and distrust.

Rather than enrich our lives, the technologies that promised to bring us together have made us more isolated than ever before.

We’re worse off for it. But by working together, we can respond to this moment of fragmentation with empathy and acceptance. We can build something that ties communities together.

Help us forge connections between people who would otherwise never meet

What we’re building

A social network you can touch

Portals form a global network of physical locations, each hosted by a Curator who connects their Portal to their community and their community to the world.

Think of Portals like a library. Neil Gaiman, the author, wrote that “Google can bring you back 100,000 answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one.”

A Portal is like that. The internet has no shortage of voices, but a Portal Curator will help you find the right one. The Portal carves out time and space to hear each other’s stories.

And a global community

In Portals, we’re creating a global public infrastructure. But to build it, we need your help.

Developing a public resource on every continent means speaking the languages of numerous communities — literally and metaphorically.

It means building systems to support an ever-growing communications infrastructure.

Who we are

Join our multidisciplinary team

We’re a growing family of artists, philosophers, entrepreneurs, and technologists dedicated to a common mission.

Most of us work from Brooklyn’s New Lab – but not everyone. Emma and Lela, our curatorial team, like to brag about the surf in Moro Bay, California, where they “work.”

Or our global network of Curators

The global Portals community is filled with Curators on (nearly!) every continent. (Dont worry - we’ll get to Antarctica soon.) These Curators facilitate dialogues, translate discussions, and connect their community to the world.

When you join Shared_Studios you join a close-knit global community. By the time you’ve settled in, you’ll have friends from Gaza to Honduras, Sweden to Nairobi.

To have an immediate impact

Shared_Studios has a bit of a problem. We have thousands of ideas and only 24 hours in a day. Everywhere we look, we see exciting possibilities, tricky challenges, and communities that deserve access to the Portals network. For every opportunity we chase, there are five more we leave behind.

The good news? Every task you work on is a chance for you to make a huge impact. Every project is a chance to shape the organization. There’s no shortage of what we can achieve together; we’re just getting started.

Help us build something that lasts — a human infrastructure for our interconnected age.
