In June, we launched a Portal at Starbucks Headquarters in Seattle and connected members of the Seattle community with coffee farmers in Rwanda, displaced communities in Iraq, and youth in Honduras.

We set up a Portal_Inflatable in Athens, Greece with the SNF Agora Institute at the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center and engaged in global dialogues around the past and future of democracy.

And as part of our partnership with the Obama Foundation, we brought a Portal to the Jane Addams Hull-House at the University of Illinois Chicago for events around community development. From there, we're bringing the Portal to Lollapalooza where it will connect festival goers to music fans around the world as a component of Lolla Cares. Come visit us at Hull-House, or stop by between sets!

Finally, at InfoComm and TIDE in Las Vegas, we set up a Portal_Inflatable and connected AV experts and artists globally. Thank you to new and tenured partners Biamp, Community, NEC, Zoom, and AVIXA.

PUBLIC HEALTH HACKATHONS

Students at Johns Hopkins University and in Gaza City innovate through Portals.

Students at Johns Hopkins University and in Gaza City innovate through Portals.

We just concluded our second groundbreaking public health hackathon using the Portal to connect students at Gaza Sky Geeks with students at Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Bioengineering Innovation and Design. Over late night coffee, teams of students worked together to address some of the most pressing healthcare challenges facing first responders and refugee communities in the Gaza Strip. Learn more here.

PORTALS AND K-12 EDUCATION

WGBH_Portals and Boston Public Media

Working in partnership with WGBH in Boston, we highlighted the impact Portals can have on education and public media. We connected the Boston_Portal to Nairobi for the network’s Design Squad Global program, co-hosted 80 teachers at our WGBH_Portal Educators Open House, and organized programming on food justice, youth storytelling, and library science.

Since early 2018, Shared_Studios has worked with Andover Public Schools to bring a Portal_Inflatable to dozens of communities and sites across Massachusetts. Led by their Director of Strategic Innovation and indefatigable Portal_Curator, Stefano Chinosi, the Andover_Portal has broken many Portal records, and is stopping everywhere from farmers markets to elementary schools and city halls. Check out the video above for the Andover_Portal's introduction to the community.

Oakland International High School

Last month, we launched our Oakland_Portal at Oakland International High School, which was founded to provide a quality alternative education for recently arrived Americans. The Portal has hosted classes for parents learning English, and participants have engaged in deep dialogue with our San Pedro Sula_Portal on topics of politics and corruption.

Stay tuned for further updates on our work in education!

"IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE I EVER ASK YOU TO DO, JUST DO THIS."
-Samantha Power on Portals

In the recently-released documentary "The Final Year," Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power raves about her Portal experience to a fellow UN Ambassador. The ambassador visited our Portal at the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, supported by UNICEF Iraq and SDG Action Campaign, where she spoke to Sidra, a young girl at the Za'atari Camp for Syrian Refugees in Jordan.“It brings home the Syria stakes, she said, "seriously, if you do nothing else I ever ask you to do, just do this.”

Many thanks to Ambassador Power, UNICEF Iraq, and the SDG Action Campaign!
