Invitation to Speak to Refugees Around the Globe

Actor Ewan McGregor speaks to Myrna, a young girl living at the Harsham Camp for refugees and IDPs in Erbil.

Shared_Studios invites you to speak to refugees abroad through Portals. Portals are gold shipping containers equipped with immersive audiovisual technology. When you enter one, you feel as though you are in the same room as someone in an identical Portal somewhere else on Earth and can converse live, full-body, making eye contact and with language interpretation.

We have Portals in America in Baltimore, Brooklyn, Chicago, Los Angeles, Milwaukee and Washington DC. You can reserve time in each of them to speak to refugee and IDP communities in Erbil, Iraq; Amman, Jordan; and Berlin, Germany. You can also enter these Portals to speak to people in Isfahan, Iran; Herat, Afghanistan; and Mexico City, Mexico.

You can talk about daily life, play charades, or just engage in a staring contest. It really is up to you. And you'll be joining some notable guests including Former President Obama, Iraqi Prime Minister al-Abadi, actor Ewan McGregor, TV host Fareed Zakaria and others.

Since launch in 2014, we've connected more than 30,000 in one-on-one dialogues and tens of thousands more across twenty countries. The encounters have been moving, unexpected, hilarious, sad, and everything in between. We hope you join us.
